This implant that has been successfully tested in mice could be the end of the need for medication for diabetics if proven effective in humans.
An adult mouse has 1.2 to 1.6 milliliters of blood versus 5 liters in adult humans. There is therefore a long way to ago to find out if the implant is as effective in humans as it is in mice. Should it be effective, it will be a boon to millions of diabetics and a heavy blow to the pharmaceutical industry.
"The ECHO system combines continuous glucose monitoring with a wirelessly powered electrocatalytic implant that oxidizes excess glucose to gluconate for renal clearance. In mice with diabesity, autonomous closed-loop control restored glucose homeostasis, reduced body weight, and promoted fat utilization without glucose-lowering drugs.
